BRIEF HISTORY

The Library of the Athens School of Fine Arts (ASFA) is the oldest and largest visual arts library in Greece. Its origins date back to the establishment of the “School of the Arts” in 1837, from whose evolution both the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and the Athens School of Fine Arts emerged.

Its first collections were formed through donations of supporting educational material (books, models, templates, paintings), and until 1910 they remained under the supervision of the central administration as part of the unified library serving all departments of the then-called ''School of Industrial Arts''.

In 1910, the School of Fine Arts was administratively separated from the School of Industrial Arts. Consequently, the collections of artistic books and paintings, which formed the basis of the Library of the School of Fine Arts, were detached from the Library of the School of Industrial Arts. From that point onward, the School of Fine Arts operated under its own Director, who was also responsible for supervising the Library.

In 1930, when the School was officially recognized as a higher and self-governed educational institution under the name “Athens School of Fine Arts,” the founding legislation included the re-establishment of the Library, along with operating regulations aligned with the newer legislation governing academic libraries.

From 1990 onwards, the ASFA Library followed a rapid course of development, taking advantage of substantial funding provided through development programs of the Ministry of Education. A comparative overview of quantitative collection data is indicative of this growth:

Until 1995, the Library was housed within the Polytechnic complex, in the ASFA building at 42 Patision Street, occupying a space of 36 square meters. It was then relocated to the facilities at 256 Pireos Street, in a space of 630 square meters.

In 2008, by presidential decree, the Library was officially renamed “Library and Information Center,” in line with all central academic libraries of Higher Education Institutions in Greece.

Since November 2016, the Library has operated in a building with a total area of approximately 4,500 square meters. The building, characterized by exposed concrete, porous stone, and wood, was designed by Atelier 66 – Antonakakis Architecture Studio & Associates. The interior spaces were designed by the architectural office WorkShop of D. Sotovikis. The interior configuration was implemented through a donation from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation.
